Why do Americans in snowy states have mud rooms but Australians in coastal towns don’t have sand rooms?
Why Do We Need A Sand Room?
You can keep your attics and basements but as a mum I am truly jealous of the functionality and organisation of mud rooms.
Living by the beach is a privilege. It just doesn’t mesh smoothly with someone like me that’s obsessed with keeping a clean house.
Sand is nature’s glitter.
The only difference is it’s not shiny so it’s harder to see if you’ve got it all.
I’m a Clean Freak And Still Find Sand Everywhere
Bedrooms are off limits after play until everyone has showered and changed. Yet somehow every night I climb into bed and feel like I’ve been rolled through crumb coating. It’s a mystery I’ll never solve.
Sand also travels well, much to my dismay. Don’t be shocked if in Summer you step through my front door and straight into a pile of sand that rivals the Egyptian desert.
That’s just what came out of the shoes my child kicked off after school while my back was turned vacuuming the pile that fell out of her backpack.
Summer as a kid in Australia is the definition of a dream childhood. I’m so privileged to raise my daughter by the beach.

How I Came To This Crazy Idea…
I simply wondered, during my daily chore of wrangling sopping wet towels and togs, why something so largely a part of our culture hasn’t made its way into our homes?
Americans contain mud and slush from Winter in a room or section of their entryway. So why don’t we have a designated space for wet and sandy togs and towels?
Sun Room vs Sand Room
Sun rooms used to be popular and would have probably worked to keep some of the sand outside the main living areas as well as offer more space to hang towels to dry. But these haven’t been popular in recent years so not many families have access to them.
Most homes you have to walk through the kitchen or most of the house to get to a bathroom to rinse off. Yes, I know there are showers at the beach, yes they help but you’ll never be fully spotless from them.
I’m Convinced! My Dream Home Needs a Sand Room
Considering it’s pretty much warm enough to swim all year round (depending on how brave you are) a sand room could become an essential to every Australian – used as often as a bathroom or kitchen.
My first world problem today is I’m running out of space to hang my sea soaked towels. It’s not life or death but that’s how change happens. You ask what if?
So what if my dream home could have a sand room? What would that look like? What would you want in yours?
