Why was the majority of 90’s decor so loud?
TV Cabinets : 7/10

Also known as ‘entertainment units’ these monstrosities weighed as much as your high school football team combined and had to house a catalogue of DVD’s (or VHS tapes!).
Most were made with a red coloured wood and had a large space for the equally bulky TV’s to live. I added points because I actually miss having a TV unit with doors sometimes. There’s definitely some days I’d love to hide the TV from my toddlers sticky fingers.
Inflatable Furniture : -1/10
I pray the plastic inflatable furniture never makes a comeback because I do not have a single good memory with them. Every single move you make is announced with a high-pitched squeaking. And when you finally cut your losses and decide the floor is better anyway you’ll leave a large pool of sweat in your place.
Attached Bar Stools : 4/10

Why did anyone want bar stools bolted to their breakfast bench? I can’t think of any good reasons so I gave them a pretty low score. As a kid the stools that also swivelled were obviously my favourite. At least they would have been easy to vacuum under, I kind of wish they made high chairs like this.
Popcorn Ceilings : 9/10
The DIY community unanimously hates popcorn ceilings and I’m not entirely sure why. Although I am biased because during sleepovers at my Nan’s house I’d make pictures from the dots on the ceiling while I fell asleep. Kind of how you make constellations out of the stars. A smooth ceiling is more aesthetically pleasing so I removed one point but I don’t get the hate.
Farm House : 2/10

I’m not referring to the farmhouse aesthetic that was popular more recently that featured a lot of weathered furniture. Farm decor brought the outdoors in. 90’s homes were havens of metal chickens in the kitchen that were unsettling but mostly harmless.
Wallpaper Borders : 7/10
Cliché border art is still used often except mostly on primary school noticeboards instead of houses. I gave it a high score because it was a small decor choice that’s pretty easy to remove.
Beaded Curtains : 5/10

My friend was allowed beaded curtains on her bedroom door and we all thought she was the coolest person ever. Points were deducted because there was no graceful way to walk through doorways without getting caught or accidentally ripping a few beads off the doorframe. But at least it sounded iconic.
Fashion has proven that everything comes back eventually because I am seeing all my high school clothes back in stores now. Although somehow I think these 90’s trends are gone forever. Are there any you’ll miss?
