In the 1960’s people had large families and small houses. Now, we have large homes that aren’t designed for modern small families.
These days square footage comes as a combo deal with extra bedrooms that aren’t needed.
What small, young families really want isn’t a secret. We want homes with:
- 3 bedrooms (max)
- Separated living areas (play spaces, media spaces, family meal spaces)
- At least one area with doors to hide the chaos
- Large outdoor covered patio
I live in the desert and during Summer it’s unsafe for kids to be outside. Families all over the country who live in states that experience extreme temperatures (heat and snow) struggle to find space for their kids when they’re stuck inside.
Our homes have to pull double duty not only as places to eat and sleep but also as a substitute for outdoor adventures and playgrounds.
Builders, please understand, when I say I need a bigger home for my family I am talking about flex space. Not additional bedrooms for kids we don’t currently have (or plan on having in the future).
The dream is to be able to have designated areas both for loud and quiet play. An extension on the typical builder grade covered outdoor area and I’ll be happy. Maybe we should bring back sunrooms?
With some protection from the elements my family will play outside all day.
There’s obviously a need for homes with more than 3 bedrooms. I’m aware my family structure is not the only one that exists.
All I’m asking for is the option to eliminate a few walls. Yes, you can make changes after purchase by why waste resources? Additional bedrooms next to common areas could be left open so there’s more space for everyone to spend time together or stretch out.
What do you think? Are other families feeling this way and would prefer larger living spaces over bedrooms?
