If black cabinets had a personality they’d be a single, professional that hates eating at home.
Con: Cleaning
Black accents, mirror features and matte finishes are some of the WORST things to clean in a home. So builders decided they should be placed primarily in the 2 dirtiest rooms in the house – the bathroom and kitchen.
They pop in home brochures and pictures but common daily tasks leave the surfaces looking more dingy than designer.
The most frustrating one for me is fingerprints. The oil on your fingers leave behind very obvious stains and there’s nothing you can do about that. So unless you’re planning on wearing gloves every time you grab something to eat your kitchen will constantly look like the canvas for a finger painting.
Con: Depression
If you want a black kitchen you NEED to consider your lighting. Unless you have a very open layout with lots of natural light black cabinets will make your kitchen feel like a dungeon.
Think about the time of day you use your kitchen. For most people it’s early in the morning before work and late at night after work. If you’re already sluggish will seeing dark cabinets give you a sense of joy or will it deepen the depressive mood you’re most likely in after a long, exhausting work day?
Only you can answer that question for yourself, for me it’s a hard no.
Con: Expensive
If you buy a Ferrari you can’t expect the services to cost the same as a Kia. Likewise, you can’t purchase a modern kitchen and expect to never pay another cent to keep it looking brand new.
Black cabinets (and black tap ware in case you didn’t know) are notorious for noticeable wear and tear such as chips and scratches.
Every little imperfection WILL stand out like a neon sign so if you don’t like a high maintenance home this isn’t for you.
Pro: Dominance
Regardless of personal preference everyone is wowed by a black kitchen. It’s sleek and a statement. As the owner of a black kitchen you’re sure to assert dominance over your friends as having the most superior aesthetic.
Pro: Still Works The Same
If you’re moving into a house that already has black kitchen cabinets and you’re not sure whether it’s for you then I have good news. Every kitchen whether old, new, red, black etc. is capable of being the backdrop for good food and family memories.
It might be harder to clean, it might show every one of your kids fingerprints but if it’s the house for you then that may not matter.
A house is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. Hard to clean surfaces such as black cabinets keep me stressed and I can’t argue that they look great if you stay single and never cook.
