Rug inlays ruin the entire house for me. Built-in features are typically regarded as high-end but they don’t seem luxury to me. It’s ironic that a technique used in the 90’s to cut costs on hardwood by filling part of the floor with carpet is now being repackaged and sold as an upgrade. Here’s just 3 reasons why I think they’re a mistake:

You’re Boxed in Permanently

Specific furniture squares would be useful if trends never changed and home décor stayed the same forever. But it doesn’t. And not being able to reposition your rug limits your rooms versatility. For example, the office below is beautifully staged however, if you wanted to move your desk out of the centre of the room, against one of the walls, or even introduce a second working space for your partner or kids, the whole room would look off. 

It’s Distracting and Shrinks Your Space

A neutral rug can add a touch of warmth to the room but every carpet inlay I’ve seen is bright colours and distracting patterns. It draws your eye straight to the floor and exaggerates the transition of textures. The result tricks your brain into perceiving the room as smaller than it is. And who wants their home to feel smaller?  

Cleaning is a Nightmare

Anything that adds time to my cleaning routine is not worth the aesthetic for me. If you love bending and changing your vacuum head continually throughout each room or have a cleaner to do the work for you then carpet inlay is perfect! Beware that professional carpet cleaning machines can also scratch the edges of the surrounding floor and cause damage. Doesn’t a floating rug that’s easily cleaned and replaced seem so much simpler? 

Not only does my brain notice the depth is off compared to a regular rug but it seems like a money pit too. You’re paying additional labour costs upfront and future costs in the future when it finally needs to be ripped out and you can’t find a floor match and the entire house needs to be redone.
